Third Annual Gay Pride Parade Athens 2007

June 23

"Love Makes No Distinction. Love Makes all the Difference!" Under this slogan, on Saturday, 23 June 2007 and under the leadership of the Greek LGBT Gays and Lesbians celebrated the Third Annual Pride Festival and Parade through the Historic Center of Athens. The day long festivities included 26 stands, the parade and a party with live shows and a DJ.
The EU has declared 2007 the European Year of Equal Opportunities for All. The organizing Committee of the Athens Pride 2007 chose it slogan with this in mind.

The Gaycorfuinfo Team participated in this years events and estimated about 2000 people marched in the Parade. An increase over last year.
The roots of the international Pride movement can be traced back to June 28th, 1969, the night that the police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City. Instead of passively accepting the situation - as they did in the past- the 200 gay men present resisted and turned the event into an uprising, with local lesbians joining in the event and to protest discrimination and violence on the basis of sexual orientation. Over the years, the anniversary has expanded into an international movement of a celebratory nature, known as Pride.

The first ever Gay Pride Parade in Athens 2005

June 25

It all began on a bright sunny Saturday afternoon at the Platia Klafthmonos where there was a band stand fully decorated in all the gay rainbow colors. Many individual booths selling various gay goods as well as booths for gay organizations and gay political groups surrounded the center of the square.
Many onlookers watched the event from a cafe in the square itself. Just about every greek television station as well as other press media were there to cover this historic event. Some 2500 gays, lesbians and their friends walked through the platia at various times to celebrate this gay pride event.
At about 6:00 o'clock the actual parade began with all the colorful banners representing the different groups and organizations participating. One of the highlights of the parade was a very large rainbow flag that had to be carried by some 20 volunteers. The 500 and some marchers began their journey up the Stadiou through the Syntagma square and then to return on the Amalias passing directly in front of the Parliament building, a truly emotional moment of the parade. The marchers then returned via the Panepistimiou to the Platia Klafthmonos where the music started and the partying continued into the evening.
